What is Stumbleupon?

Stumbleupon founded by Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith, Justin LaFrance, and Eric Boyd in November 2002, is a web search engine that aims in helping the users to find web contents, discover web pages and images, and rate them.

 

This site lets the members to stumble upon the pages approved by friends and companions, like the pages which categorise under their “favourites,” go through their personal interest, and many other interesting divisions.

 

The pages have filters that allow you to choose from subject for all age groups, or R rated subject, or X rated subject. Google Chrome, Opera, Mozilla, Internet Explorer, and Safari have the toolbar version and it also works best with other independent browsers.

 

This discovery engine got enough attention from Brad O’Neill, the investor of Silicon Valley, who involved in fund raising of amount $1.2 million from other investors like Mitch Kapor of Mozilla and Ram Shriram of Google.

 
Features
Stumble video- Stumbleupon introduced their Stumble Video site on December 13, 2006. It allows users to look at all the videos without using toolbar, which other people have presented and rated them using Ajax programming.

 

The software basically collects videos from MySpace, MetaCafe, CollegeHumor, DailyMotion, Google, Vimeo, You Tube, and FunnyOrDie. It also initiated its Stumble Video for the Internet Channel and a video discovery app was created by Greg Isenberg in September 2013.

Stumble Thru- The Stumble Thru service was established in April 2007, which allows users to stumble through the sites of Wikipedia, You Tube, The Onion, and Public Broadcasting Service. By 2010, the Stumble Thru included many more sites like Blogger, Break.com, MetaCafe.com, WordPress, Scientific American, Rolling Stone, BBC.com, HowStuffWorks.com,

 

Wired.com, and many more. It allows users to register only to these specific websites rather than the whole web.
Su.pr- The Su.pr is the URL shortening service that uses the short domain name while linking a page.

 

It came into market in March 2009 and is claimed to give similar service to that of bit.ly and TinyURL. Su.pr links to the statuses and updates that we get from Twitter and Facebook. At first it was available to people receiving invitation code but now it has been adopted by bundle of Stumbleupon users.

 
Stumble DNA- This feature was released in 2012 that focuses on accumulating content and the trending topics that are recommended for the users. It also provides a section where you can view your connections made through this software.

 
Paid discovery- The Paid discovery service is a simple tool made for the ad system. This service sends users directly to the web pages and letting them discover your site. With this option one can engage more traffic to their ad pages.

 

Conclusion
According to a report, Stumbleupon fetched more traffic than any other social platform, placing Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter in the second, third, and fourth position respectively. It grew tremendously over the last period and claimed to have 10 million members as reports issued in 2010 and reached over 25 million mark by 2012.

 

Later in May 2007, the ownership was handed over to eBay, but it was brought back by the founders within next 2 years.
